VEGEMITE A PRECURSOR TO MISERY! ARE YOU SERIOUS?
For all of us who have spent time living and working in regional Australia we know that the “Bush Telegraph” is alive and well. As for those of us who haven’t heard that term before, the “Bush Telegraph” is defined as a rapid informal network by which information or gossip is spread.
This was certainly the case a couple of weeks ago when a Minister of our Australian Government visited a remote north Queensland Aboriginal Community. And so the story goes that, whilst in the Community, one of the Minister’s mates mentioned that he had heard from other people that certain members of the Aboriginal Community were using their favourite toast spread to make themselves salty cocktails!!
As a magazine that seeks to highlight positive and meaningful contributions, we are not going to continue to perpetuate the reporting of these vicious rumours that also made atrocious links to child, domestic and sexual abuse and specifically and exclusively singled out a group of people …. Further shame was brought to us all, as the collective Australian society, when these rubbish reports made it to the BBC, The New York Times and other international media. Once again letting the world know how incredibly bad we often are as a nation in our attempts to cultivate positive relationships with our Indigenous brothers and sisters.
Whilst Aboriginal families continue to live lives in limbo, full of distress and insecurity trying to decipher what the Government’s vagueness around the Closure of Communities means to their future and livelihoods….
Whilst the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 is continuously amended to chop and hack out the last remaining rights Aboriginal people have to protect and preserve their past and continued connection to their country….
Whilst Aboriginal families continue to deal with the daily struggle of what welfare dependency does to wellbeing and the ability to build prosperity and create choices…..
