Town of Cochrane Strategic Plan – Final Report October 2014
4.1.10 Community Resource Centres
Cochrane has a variety of resource centres to support its population (Table 4.2).
The Timmins & District Multicultural Centre29 serves Cochrane and offers a range of settlement
services, including employment assistance and referrals, health care access, educational and
training counselling, and assistance in adjusting to life in Cochrane and area. The volunteer-based
program matches newcomers with area residents who serve as mentors. All of its services (except
document translation) are free to newcomers.

The newly established (January 2012) Cochrane and District Social Planning Council30 (CDSPC) is
also based out of Timmins but serves Cochrane. It will assist area organizations to help prioritize
and coordinate their services, to avoid duplication and allocate resources more effectively. The
CDSPC is funded on a three-year project basis by the Trillium Foundation, and must develop a
long-term sustainability plan for itself if it is to remain viable past 2014.
4.1.11 Poverty
Individuals with low incomes are entitled to assistance in the form of low and geared-to-income
housing through the Cochrane District Social Services Advisory Board (DSSAB).31 DSSAB manages
a housing portfolio of 1289 units and 106 rent supplement units across the district.
4.1.12 Leisure
Cochrane’s location in Northeastern Ontario places it in the heart of the Boreal forest, surrounded
by lakes, and rivers. Residents have easy access to fishing, hunting, wildlife watching, and many
other forms of outdoor recreational opportunities.
