4.1.8 Physical Health
In general, Cochrane residents are less healthy than their provincial counterparts26 (Table 4.1).
They are more likely to be overweight and suffer from diabetes, and they drink and smoke more
than the Ontario average. Heavy drinking among youth in particular is worrisome in this region, as
it is double the provincial average.
Life expectancy is lower in the Cochrane region by approximately four years. Premature mortality
–defined as those who die before the age of 75– is 42% higher than the provincial average.

4.1.9 Health and Social Services
The Lady Minto Hospital in Cochrane has its own resident surgeon and many family physicians.
The Town’s goal is to ensure that all citizens have a family doctor.28
