I have lived my entire life on Long Island. Like many Long Islanders, I have always been drawn to the water. As a youngster in Brooklyn, I grew up near the Verrazano Narrows and enjoyed fishing. As an adult, I moved to Nassau County and enjoyed the beaches. I served as a teacher, coach, and administrator in the Hempstead UFSD for 32 years. I was privileged to take my students to enjoy our local beaches as a way of celebrating their accomplishments. A fond memory is taking an excited group of students whale watching on the coast of Long Island. As an educator, I looked for community service projects for my students. such as Habitats for Humanity, help families at Ronald McDonald House, and food and clothing drives. My father served in the U.S. Army an was active in theAmerican Legion. We volunteered at the VA hospital. I served as a member of the Sons of the American Legion. This experience gave me a deep and abiding respect for the contributions our veterans have made for our country. I read in a local newspaper about opportunities to incorporate two of my interests, love of the ocean and helping military members. I thought joining the Auxiliary would be a great opportunity to give back. I have served 13 years in the Auxiliary in many roles. ADSO for Diversity, SO-DV, VFC, FC, IPFC, FSO-PE, FSO-PA, & SO-PE. I am also trained in food service and have served at Station Jones Beach. What I enjoy most is mentoring new members. Most recently Flotilla 13-12 gave a very successful new member orientation session. It was my privilege to help plan and execute this session as the lead instructor. I look forward to serving alongside my shipmates.
