because that’s the core idea in art
therapy: Everyone is creative and
can be expressive in the visual arts
when working in a supportive setting.
That said, I did expect that perhaps
the effects would be stronger for
those with prior experience.”
The study was published in the
journal Art Therapy.

A Creative Approach to
Reducing Stress
Coaching at Work
In this fast-paced world, it’s easy to get
overwhelmed. However, according to
a new Drexel University study, art can
significantly reduce a hormone that is
directly linked to stress.

A biomarker, similar to a hormone,
can be used to measure a particular
condition in the body. Cortisol was
one such hormone measured in the
study through saliva samples. A high
cortisol level is directly linked to a
high stress level.
In a series of studies, 39 adults
ranging from 18 to 59 years old were
invited to participate in 45 minutes
of art-making. Cortisol levels were
taken before and after the art-making
period. Various art materials were
available to the participants to use
with no instruction or guidance, and
an art therapist was present during
the activity to help if needed. More
than half the participants reported
they had little experience with artwork.

The researchers found that 75 percent
of the participants’ cortisol levels
lowered during their 45 minutes of
making art. There was no correlation
between artwork experience and
lower levels of cortisol.
