CMS Staffing Compliance with Facility Assessments
The Global Functional Index is based on a widely used functional composite index called the Barthel Index and is composed of self-performance with ADLs . Residents that fall in the “ ADL Function Low ” range will likely require assistance with almost all their daily activities whereas residents in the “ ADL Function High ” range are likely to require assistance with only a few activities . The “ ADL Function Moderate ” group would fall somewhere in the middle with respect to assistance required . Knowing how many and the percentage of residents in each group has important implications for staffing related to providing daily nursing care .
The acuity category in which a resident is classified tells you a lot about that particular resident ’ s instability and how much skilled care they are likely to require . The moderate acuity group is about 3 times more likely to require acute hospitalization than the low acuity group , and the high acuity group is about 5 times more likely to require acute hospitalization than the moderate acuity group .
