The Quality Manager Facility Assessment MDS Resident Population Profile : Acuity & Functional Indices uses two composite indices found in the Resident Population Profile to describe two very important dimensions of a nursing facility ’ s population : Acuity Index and Global Functional Index . The indices eliminate the limitation of looking at the presence of individual conditions as only isolated conditions , and instead allows insight into multiple related conditions that , in combination , may require higher staffing and competency .

This enables the Acuity Index and the Global Functional Index to capture the total burden of a group of common conditions on the Acuity of a resident and the total burden of multiple functional dependencies on Global function .
