Recommended Rides
bike and access the beach of stunning
Bear Lake. Traveling along the
shore, I just could not quit glancing
over at the water, such a beautiful
blue! Because of that unique
turquoise-blue color, it is referred
to as "the Caribbean of the
Rockies.”
For a beautiful 50 mile detour,
ride a circle around Bear Lake by
staying north on 89 as you go
through Garden City. At the north
end of the lake, turn right onto
North Beach Road and you will find
a delightful little stop at the Bear
Cave Drive-In. It is definitely worthwhile
for fresh burgers, crisp onion
rings, and original flavor shakes.
Proceed ahead to North Beach
State Park and follow the shoreline
south on the east side of the lake.
East Shoreline Road is an old chip
and seal surface without lane
markings and 35 mph limit. Take it
easy and enjoy the lake view on
your right and the mountains on
your left, as you complete your circuit
of Bear Lake and rejoin 30 and
89 north back into Garden City. At
the stop sign before the Shell
Station take a left on 89 South and
head for the mountains.
Soon after leaving Garden City,
you will begin to climb. Plan to stop
at the rest area about 5 or 6 miles
up the mountain for some awesome
pictures of beautiful Bear
Lake below. I just don’t have words
to describe the ride; up, down, left,
right-oh my. No tricky bits or
decreasing radius curves, just mile
after mile of smooth, undulating,
rhythm inducing tarmac. You will
pass several ski resorts, half dozen
trailheads, and get glimpses of the
majestic Temple and Beirdneau
Peaks as you travel through the
Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National
Forest. Over the top and down the
other side you go. The fun doesn’t
end when you hit the valley ‘cause
the Logan Highway follows every
little bend in the Logan River all the
way into town. Just watch out for
the fly fishermen that are having
their own chosen good time. This is
perhaps the most enjoyable stretch
of public asphalt I have had the
privilege to ride in the last dozen
years. I enjoyed it so much I ran it
again on the return trip! CMA
