I
am sure many folks have traveled
this road before, but to me, this route
was new and a real unexpected surprise
on my way from Arkansas to the Oregon
coast. I was really just attempting to
avoid the wide-open expanse of I-80/I-
84, the Salt Lake City junction and all
that is involved in big metro areas. I
wanted to stick to the two-lane. Hwy
30/89 from Green River, Wyoming into
the backside of Logan, Utah turned out
to be an excellent choice. Wow, what a
great route. This detour proved to be
one of the better decisions I made on
that trip.
So, that being said, the next time you
find yourself on Interstate 80 in western
Wyoming, headed toward the
Northwest via I-84 or I-15, do yourself a
favor and jump off the big road just past
Little America at exit 66 onto US
30/Utah 30 West as you head towards
Bear Lake. You will encounter mostly
sagebrush dotted countryside and a few
rolling hills on the first part of this route.
You can amuse yourself watching Hams
Fork as it gets closer and farther away
from the highway on its impossibly
squiggly route across Wyoming. If you
have a need, the usual mixture of nonfranchise
fast food and gas-n-go marts
are about 50 miles out in Kemmerer,
Wyoming. Speaking of other needs,
there is a handy rest area about seven
miles south of Garden City at Cheney
Creek. It is a great place to get off the
