From the railroads to canal boats that once linked Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and the manufacturing of steam locomotives in Altoona shops that connected the rest of the country , Blair County , Pennsylvania , has been a pivotal link to our nation ’ s economic growth . In Altoona and surrounding communities , much of that history has been preserved and is open for the public to visit .
