CLUBSKILLSGUIDE SKILLS AND EDUCATION – THE CLUB’S ROLE Clubs are reminded of their responsibility to not only encourage participation in basketball, but to also teach each and every player the necessary basic skills so they can enjoy the game with the greatest satisfaction for the longest possible time. While the physical attributes of a player are important and will vary with age, the degree of skill of each and every player will stay with them. Skill is learned. Good club coaching is teaching the basic skills to all players. Club coaches should endeavour to work together for the good of the players and to ensure consistent teaching and coaching. Most club players will have multiple coaches, not only in their junior career but also at senior level, so winning and losing will initially be secondary to skill development. All coaches and players need good skill level passed on from level to level by each and every club coach. Should a club coach feel they do not have the competency to develop the skill level, they should consider passing the player(s) onto another coach, or seek assistance to develop their own competency. The role of the coach at club level is crucial for player development. The player’s skill level and understanding will determine their ultimate enjoyment. 5
