CLUBSKILLSGUIDE For most clubs, coaching is voluntary and coaches can take things personally if a player or parent expresses a desire to leave and seek other opportunities for development. This situation demands respect from all, in order to reach the best decision for the player and their family. Sharing players and working collaboratively for skill development are the requirements for good coaches. The national system of player and coach development programmes exists to meet this need. The goal of each club should be beyond its own organisational well-being and should place the player (and the coach) at the forefront of its intent. Player Development is Paramount Teams in competition, or players with skills in teams in competition? Is it winning for the coach (and some parents), or development for the player (and every parent)? A school is responsible for basic literacy and numeracy for students under the age of 18. The basketball equivalent is that a club is responsible for players’ sound basic individual skills – this is their basketball literacy. Clubs of junior players are responsible for basketball literacy. 15
