CLUBSKILLSGUIDE WORKING TO THE NATIONAL PLAN (FOR EACH PLAYER) A curriculum will work with any programme if the teaching and coaching is focused and committed to improvement. However, it must be consistent in its emphasis and be specific and detailed when required. The AoE guidelines and, subsequently, the Club Skills Guide, are tools for better player and coach development. Success in terms of better coaching/better player development programmes and systems will be the reward for all in the national plan. Understanding Development Needs Clubs may find it hard to meet the expectations or development needs of all players. The national system and talent pathways exist to help players and coaches develop. At the development stage, players may train and play with both a school and a club as a solution for their development needs of increasing the hours of training and preparation to become more skilful. Common Goal Clubs are often competing not only on the court but off it as well. Sometimes, this becomes competing not through striving to be better or maintaining focus, but by demeaning the performance of others. Pulling other clubs or programmes down by criticising is not the answer. Working collaboratively for basketball will improve the success of the sport in the UK. This key principle is one of many included in the Positive Coaching Scotland scheme (see www.sportscotland.org.uk for further details). Developing Young People Young people often have to consider leaving home to progress their study or career, and basketball is no different. Going to another club or coach is a consideration for all players and parents, in order to progress and develop. If all clubs cater for development then this will not be an issue. The progression from Under 16s to Under 18s becomes a key age and stage. The integration of Under 18s and senior basketball opportunities is also important in development, especially for players wanting to specialise. Holding on to better junior players too long, or simply to benefit the achievements of the senior team, also proves limiting. 14
