BRINGING NEW LIGHT TO SLOUGH ST PAUL’S
» » GLASS SPECIALIST TUFFX
has cemented its name in
Oxford’s diocesan history by
providing 26 panels of 21.5mm
toughened glass to St Paul’s
Church, Slough.
The installation forms part
of a much larger renovation
project, which is being led by
JBKS Architects - specialists
in the restoration and
modernisation of churches
and houses of worship.
The congregation has
raised the majority of
the funding needed for
the work in an attempt to
guarantee their church remains
suitable for generations to come.
The oversized, laminated
glass has created a more inviting
feel to St Paul’s, allowing for
glimpses into the church interior.
Visitors now enter through a vast
doorway, into a simple reception
space
filled with
natural light.
Throughout the
rest of the building, intricate
notching into the glass ensured
that TuffX’s product met the
requirements of the existing
stone pillars, sitting old and new
seamlessly together.
Due to its strength and
subsequent safety, toughened
laminated glass has become a
favourite for many architects.
This coupled with their reputable
product lines and delivery
schedules is increasingly making
TuffX a preferred supplier. TuffX
Managing Director Graham Price
commented: “It has been a pleasure,
and a privilege to have provided
one of our flagship products to
St Paul’s Church, especially given
the tremendous efforts made by
the congregation to bring their
renovation ambitions to life.
Churches are places of incredible
importance to local communities,
so on this occasion we needed the
approval of many, not just a few.
Part of the spec to JBKS
Architects was to create space
using high quality materials,
while maintaining simplicity.
Features such as pre-drilled holes
and custom shaped cut-outs have
fulfilled this requirement, all in
a timely manner. Built in 1906,
St Paul’s was keen to preserve as
much of its architectural heritage
as possible, and we feel that our
combined industry expertise has
achieved precisely that.”

MAKING BEAUTIFUL GLASS
DOORS WORK BEAUTIFULLY
» » THE BEAUTY AND VERSATILITY OF
glass makes it a popular door material choice
with architects and interior designers, especially
for minimalist and open plan settings where
through-visibility is part of the design scheme.
Now Norseal can make those sliding, swing or
automatic glass doors perform and function
beautifully with a range of acoustic and fire seals
that will work superbly without compromising
design lines.
Architects and designers are increasingly
specifying glass doors as less wood or metal
means improved daylighting, unobstructed
views, and a high-end, contemporary aesthetic.
But sealing those glass doors has traditionally
been a headache for technicians who struggle
to make the door work acoustically in situ
or in fire safety terms. The visual accessibility
that glass doors offer works particularly well
for meeting rooms and offices, increasing the
impression of space and reducing the need for
artificial lighting. But providing an effective
acoustic rating for a glass door requires an
effective acoustic seal, a challenge on glass
doors.
The Norseal range of seals for glass doors
provide an effective unobtrusive acoustic sealing
for standard single swing glass doors. For
sliding doors and automatic sliding doors, we
can provide a range of acoustic solutions that
are also suitable for fire rated, smoke rated and
mobility compliant glass doors.
Central to that Norseal range is the Schall-
Ex® GS-H8/12 automatic drop seal, suitable for
commercial grade doors with a glass thickness
ranging from 8mm - 12mm. It is available in
sleek silver anodised aluminium or stainless-
steel finish aluminium to match most glass door
hardware and has a single actuation mechanism
and a self-extinguishing silicone seal.
Importantly, it can achieve sound reduction
up to 55dBRw making it perfect for offices,
conference spaces, hotels, and residential spaces.
It provides smoke and draft protection as well
as giving the best possible acoustic performance
for the glass door. A version is also available for
retro fit to existing doors.
