REFLECTING
ON THE PAST
With #10YearChallenge
taking over social media at
the moment, we are invited to
look back at a snap shot from
a decade ago to see how much
we’ve changed and how far we’ve
come. Is re-opening a door to the
past always a good idea though?
» » PEOPLE OFTEN TALK ABOUT FIVE-YEAR
plans or long-term lists, but without mentioning the B-word,
it’s hard to imagine what the next couple of months will be
like, never mind 2029 (how scary does that sound?)
Regardless, the latest trend at the moment – particularly
for social media – is to find an image from ten years ago
and post it next to a more recent one and compare the
difference. While, on paper (or on screen) this may seem
like a superficial exercise, there is something to be said for
finding a marker in the past and seeing how you – or your
business – has changed since.
It isn’t without risk, not everyone has improved over the
last decade (none of us have got any younger that’s for sure),
and it may rake-up some bad memories if our personal
situation has changed for the worse since 2009, but on a
professional level I can see the merit in giving it a go.
If your business life has improved in the past ten years,
how wonderful to get the opportunity to look back at
your journey to where you are now; maybe you’ve built a
company up, launched a new line, or made a career move
that has changed your life. If on the other hand, you find
yourself stuck in a rut – that you thought you’d be out of
by now – or haven’t made the progress you thought, or
you feel you’re in a worse position than before, is it time
to think about making a change now, rather than waiting
another 10 years?
Over, at one of our other magazines The Locksmith
Journal, we are celebrating our own 10-year anniversary,
and it’s given me the chance to look back over all the
issues that have ever been published; something I feel we
don’t do often enough as we are always too busy planning
the next edition. One thing is certain, industry is moving
fast, technology is developing every month, time waits for
no-one; but the next ten years will go very slowly indeed if
you aren’t where you feel you should be.
Good luck and see you next month (because I’ll still be
here!)

FIRE SAFETY & DIGITAL
SECURITY SUMMIT 2019
» » THIS SEPTEMBER WILL
be see the inaugural Fire
Safety & Digital Security
Summit 2019 take place at the
prestigious Jaguar Land Rover
facility in Castle Bromwich.
The Summit – brought to
you by the same team behind
magazines Clearview, Pro
Installer, The Locksmith Journal,
and Lockex 2018 – Security
& Fire Safety – plans to be an
annual event covering the main
issues in the industry through
a series of seminars, expert
discussions and demonstrations,
plus peer-to-peer networking
opportunities.
Organiser Steve Sidebottom
commented: “Fire safety is the
hottest topic in our industry at
the moment, and its crossover
with fenestration and the
security sector, means that
everyone who writes for or
reads any of our magazines is
affected by this ever-changing
subject both professionally and
personally.
“The decision to start a
Fire Safety & Digital Security
Summit 2019 – to coincide
with September’s Fire Safety
Week national campaign – has
come as a direct response to
the ever-increasing news stories
and feature articles we have
seen across all of our titles, here
at Clearview, over the past 12
months.
“One very important aspect
of Fire Safety within our
industry that has stood out time
and time again, is the need for
open dialogue at every level. The
Summit will be the opportunity,
therefore, to get everyone up-
to-date with the latest ideas and
innovations, proper explanations
of guidelines and regulations,
plus a platform to discuss how
we all move forward as one
entity.”
The Fire Safety & Digital
Security Summit 2019 is still
open for guest speakers and
high-profile industry experts
to book a slot for a seminar or
key note speech. As well as the
Summit, guests will enjoy a tour
of the Castle Bromwich Jaguar
Land Rover plant, and evening
meal, with an after-dinner
speech.
More information will
be available in due
course. Please contact
Steve Sidebottom at
[email protected]
if you would like to be
a part of the event.
