“ They are called a few different things and Google searches are high for industrial style doors , steel replacement doors and , of course , the original Crittall trademark ,” Colin begins .
“ Who would have thought that in 2021 a century-old product would be so popular ? That so many of us remember as draughty , freezing cold windows and doors . Not forgetting how easy they were to break into . I ’ m talking from personal experience . The thief even stole one of my raincoats because it started to rain while he was filling his pockets !”
Yet , the door style Colin describes has been reborn ; either made by the same company , Crittall , or with aluminium replica frames but now , high security with double glazing and low u values for today ’ s environment .
At Colin ’ s Sash Windows they ’ ve become the second-best-selling product ; in its aluminium form . Surprisingly good value but with some size restraints because of the slim aluminium profile . The real McCoy ( or should that be McCrittall ?), made of steel , can be made higher and wider but , so is the price tag .
Colin continues : “ Our affordable Heritage French doors , with the all-important replica lock housings , can be a maximum 1800mm wide and 2100mm high . If you have a bigger space , you will need side lights or top lights which can be openable or fixed . They are supplied with 28mm double glazed sealed units . They are available in Black ( our most popular ), Anthracite RAL 7016 and gloss white , or sprayed in any RAL colour , with handles and hinges in black , as standard , but you could have them in a different finish if requested .”
Perhaps , most importantly however , as well as a multipoint locking system , doors and windows can now be specified to comply with Part Q ( security of dwellings ) of Building Regulations which makes them extremely hard to break into , so your raincoats – and everything else in your home – will be perfectly safe .
