I received a call from a solicitor today, telling me a client of ours had slipped on her
ceramic tiles after having her carpets cleaned, and there was going to be a heavy law
suit coming our way. We in formed them that we tell every client to be very careful
when walking on tiled or laminate surfaces, as they will be slippery. They said no such
conversation took place. They wanted the details of our Insurance company as they
wished to deal with them direct and not us. Anyway, to cut a long... Let this be a warning...
“CAUTION SIGNS”
Comments
Shaun Scarlett Hazelton We tell all our
customers the same it is also in writing on our
work orders are we still liable ?
Kevin Gullick I put signs on tile that say
carpets cleaned tile is slippery. Then take a
picture
Sean Cristobal Rael Man that’s horrible, I’m
always stressed out over something like that
happening. You can only do your best to protect
yourself and business to many people are looking
for a way to make a quick buck these days
Jenny Boymal Not sure if it works the
same across the world, but in Australia signs
certainly don’t take away liability. I would get
every customer to sign something that says they
understand that this is a risk until the carpet is
fully dry. I am surprised this does not come up
more often - massive risk.
Paul Pearce I agree with Jenny a sign is not
enough, especially if it’s so small that your client
can barely see it. You need to discus the issues
with the client and print the caution signs out on
A3 paper and leave in the door ways. Great post
by the way.
Scott Mcfadzen Interesting post. I believe a
form could be signed before the job us started.
We also use a Towel and wipe the tiles off when
finished.
John Rooney I don’t see them winning this
case, wouldn’t they have to prove that they
slipped because of the moisture from the carpets.
Aren’t homeowner responsible for what happens
in their own house.
Isn’t it obvious to the homeowner that
they carpets are wet, afterall they setup the
appointment, everyone knows carpets are wet
when being cleaned.
Shawn McCaulley I had a similar situation a
few years ago doing a lobby at a hotel. They said
guest slipped on marble floor and there were no
signs. Luckily for me I had in writing that hotel
was to provide signs and walk off matts, which
they did. The front desk person removed them
after I left and it was on camera. Saved my ass!
Jenny Boymal In Australia the customer
would win this case without a doubt. I would
