The first question that a teacher of Foreign Languages should ask himself is "What is vocabulary?". Vocabulary are the words, the linguistic elements that are part of a language. This includes all the kinds of lexical words that are known, from normative grammar to expressions, "muleteers", slang, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, among others.

Vocabulary is the essential element both in understanding the text, be it written or oral, as well as in its production. The teaching of the lexicon consists of instructing the students in the adequate knowledge, learning and use of the words of the language. The development of lexical knowledge has the participation of the dictionary which is essential for the development of the learning of the lexicon by the students.
