Joyous Aveiro

In this edition, the region of Aveiro in northern Portugal is in the spotlight
Air quality check
Portugal as a whole has had some positive improvements in air quality and has seen a downward trend in all air pollutants since 1990. National policies and the economic crisis have contributed to declining emissions in recent years.
Air quality in the Aveiro region is relatively good, due to an overall comparatively low population density and an open landscape in a maritime climate.
However, nitrogen dioxide, PM10 and ozone exceedances do occur occasionally. Traffic, wood burning for residential heating, industry and port activities are relevant contributors to greenhouse gas and air pollution emissions. Forest fires can also be a seasonal issue for the region.

Capturing voices on film

ClairCity is about putting citizens into the heart of policy-making on air quality and carbon emissions reductions. Across our cities and regions this summer, we are collecting videos about the experiences of older people in walking or cycling in their hometown. Our YouTube channels for each city will host contributions from people discussing whatever feels important to them; whether that is safety for women on the way to work as Julie described in Bristol, or the differences that 50 years have made to the city of Amsterdam from Mr Van Moorselaar.
Celebrating citizens
Each city will host a celebration of their films, sharing them with the local community. The films will be included in our Europe-wide dissemination, showing how older people- a vulnerable group for the health impacts of air pollution- feel about the smart mobility options in their areas, and the issues that are relevant to them.
