CA8-OOSTPOOL TONEELGROEP
TRAILERPERFORMANCE COOKIES
On the 7th of may we went to see an performance of the Oostpool toneelgroep
with our class. This theatre drives to schools and other places to perfrom in a
truck and when they arrive they rebuild the truck into a theatre with chairs for
the audience, a stage with attributes and even a room for special effects. This
year the performance was named Cookies and the performance was about the
fear that just being yourself would eventually not be good enough.
Last year we saw another performance of this theatre , that performance was
called Hard Candy. Last year I thought it had been quite a shocking and odd
performance. It was very different from anything I had ever seen before. It had
been about a girl taking revenge on a man who had sexually abused young girls.
That’s why I didn’t know what to expect for this performance Cookies and I had
even prepared myself for it a bit.
In Cookies, the main person Mark and Kat have been together for seven years.
Kat has studied cultural anthropologies and now works in a lunchroom. Mark just
stopped working at the radio and started at the television. Their live together is
very much like a routine and is very plain. The price tags are still on the clothes
and furniture and all conversation appear live online. Both Mark an Kat seem to
want more from life. Mark tells Kat about when he went to a Mediterranean cafe
and saw a girl he found beautiful and who had a neavus on her forehead. Mark
had found it very odd that someone with with a neavus on her forehead could
still be beautiful and from that moment he started getting very confused.
Duri.ng the performance many facts about the internet are told, commercials are
shown and those together with thoughts about life which everyone has form the
performance. It shows what cookies does on the internet and what it would do if
it wasn’t just on the internet but also in your head, wondering around like a
stranger.
I found the performance quite funny, especially the way Kat expresses her
annoyance towards Mark when he is acting like an idiot and asking all kinds of
questions about life that no one knows the answer to. It was also educational,
about life and internet. I did find it a little confusing sometimes. They tried to
show a lot in only a very short time and therefore it went pretty fast and some
things that could have made it easier to understand were skipped. The message
was that being yourself is good enough. Even though it wasn’t always easy to
follow, I liked it and found it very interesting to watch.
