Chancellorsville
Victory in Chancellorsville
Between April 30 and May 6, 1863, the battle of Chancellorsville took place. Our forces were led by General Robert E. Lee. The Union was under the command of Major General Joseph Hooker. In this truly inspirational tale of overcoming unbelievable odds, the Confederate forces were able to defeat the Union army which had twice as many reinforcements. This victory was made possible through Lee's genius decision to divide his forces in order to out flank his opponent. This battle resulted in heavy casualties including the esteemed Lieutenant General Thomas J. Jackson. The heroic "Stonewall" Jackson met his fateful end when he was accidentally wounded by one of his own soldiers. He died of his wounds a few days later. General Robert E. Lee is quoted as saying "He (Jackson) has lost his left arm, but I have lost my right arm." The death of this great leader will no doubt test the strength of our great nation and army. However, we will come out of this period of trial stronger than ever before.
