“An engineering project begins with surveying; planning and
design are based on this surveying data, and the cost is estimated
according to it. Therefore, surveying is fundamental for engineering
students,” said Er. Kameshwor Sahani. On the eleventh and
twelfth day, we carried out bridge-site survey in a nearby gorge.
Two groups were merged for this work. Longitudinal section
and cross-section of river, contouring and detailing of river’s
topography were done.“The best part of the camp,”said Roshan
Khatri about bridge-site surveying.
A brief introduction and a practice session regarding total station,
building layout, analytical intersection and resection were held
prior to road surveying. The fi nal two project-days were invested in road surveying. The longitudinal profi le
and cross-section of a kilometer of a part of the Fast Track was instructed
for the surveying of road. We mostly used tacheometer, ranging rods,
auto-level and levelling staff for all our works with occasional use of
Total Station. “The camp was exhausting, but it was also a chance for
us to check our endurance, mental and physical strength,”said Aaryan
Koirala.
Suraj Bhandari, putting his conclusive remarks on the survey camp,
mentioned, “The survey camp, though subjected us to blistering heat and
chilly mornings and evenings, turned out to be a good learning experience
— from instruments like Total Stations to software like AutoCAD, SW-
DTM and MS Excel.” Subash Koirala added, “The camp was all about
working hard, having fun and getting results.”
On the sixteenth day, after the internal viva, we were allowed to roam outside the camp, utilizing which we
went to see the reservoir of Pharping hydropower. We left MARS Nepal on the seventeenth day. The camp was
not yet over. We had collected data in the camp, but materialized
it by plotting it to develop topographical maps; longitudinal
profi les and cross-sections of bridge site; plan and sections of road
surveying. Finally, two copies of the fi nal report, along with the
attachments, were submitted to the external examiner.
In a nutshell, the camp was more than just a course, for it taught
us to be extra-diligent. It helped us grow “technically”with the
use of instruments, calculations, software, data analysis and data
interpretation, the importance of accuracy and precision, and
the minimization of errors. Further, it boosted up the experience
of surveying works and the friendship among us. The batch is
indebted to the department and the facilitators for this erudite opportunity.
