CIVIL INSIGHT 2018
SURVEY CAMP 2018
Reported by:
Saurav Ghimire
Batch 2016
“The only source of knowledge is experience.” This quote by Albert Einstein exemplifi es what the civil
engineering batch 2016 experienced during the Survey Camp 2018.
Survey Camp (CIEG 210) is a two-credit course evaluated through
reports, viva voce, drawings and on-fi eld application of the courses
Engineering Survey I and II. Every year, the Department of Civil
and Geomatics Engineering organizes Survey Camp for the fourth
semester students. This year too, the batch 2016 went to MARS
Nepal Engineering Survey Camp Pvt. Ltd. for a total of 17 days in
order to fulfi ll the course requirements.
MARS Nepal Engineering Survey Camp, a privately held and
artifi cially created landscape, is located at Karyabinayak, Municipality,
ward-12,Bungamati, Lalitpur, about 6 km far from Ekantakuna-
Chakrapath Chowk of Lalitpur followed by Nakhhu, Bhaisepati and
Bungamati. It takes around half an hour of bus ride to reach the
site from Ekantakuna. Covering over hundred ropanies of land, there are 14 prefabricated houses spread
along the sloping landscape with three ponds, a poultry
farm, kitchen, dining and a hall. The area is mainly built
for the purpose of surveying for engineering students.
The slope is good for contour study, level transfer and
detailing for plotting the map. The major landmarks near
MARS Nepal are Pharping Hydropower and a part of
Kathmandu-Nijgadh Fast Track.
The batch 2016 departed to the project area, along
with the camp coordinator Er. Manish Prakash,
faculties Er. Kshitiz Gautam, Er. Kameshwor Sahani and
administratitive staff Mr. Shivaji Dhakal, on August 29,
2018. The class of 59 was divided into 10 groups before
the camp and the captains were chosen at the venue. On
the fi rst day, we started off with Recce and established
our stations. Two control points, CP1 and CP2, were
also provided. Following the establishment of points, traversing,
horizontal angle measurement, level transfer and detailing were
carried out for a week inside the MARS Nepal compound. During
the survey camp, Er. Manish Prakash remarked, “The students
have to go through this course not to master surveying, but to
know what it feels like to work on the fi eld, to tackle the errors
and apply whatever they have learned in Engineering Survey in
the previous semesters.”
