CIVIL INSIGHT 2018
based on the case study of Indrawati III hydropower,
where they had installed their automated silt fl ushing
system.
Another speaker Mr. Kumar Pandey, chairman
of NHPC and Vice President of IPPAN, shared his
experience on how the new technology of fl ushing
system has helped the working effi ciency of Indrawati
III HEP. Further, he put forward his views on how an
engineer must be prepared when it comes to bringing
new technologies to use.
Attended by the students of Civil Engineering, faculty
members of DCGE, alumni of DCGE, chairpersons
and employees of different hydropower companies, it
allowed the participants to share opinions, thoughts
and suggestions. There was a good interaction
between the audience and guest speakers after each
session. The use of rubber for construction of a weir
and the depiction of how it is more benefi cial than other
materials were the highlights of the series. However, the
testing was done as per the river properties available
in India so for its use in Nepal, we will require more
research and testing prior to is installation here in the
country.
Dr.-Ing. Ramesh Kumar Maskey, professor of Civil
Engineering at Kathmandu University, gave the closing
remarks thanking the guest speaker for sharing their
knowledge with us and encouraging students to
perform more research so that Nepal can also use
rubber weirs as per its river conditions.
In essence, as there is ongoing rapid development
of hydropower in Nepal, Prof. Eldho’s presence at
Kathmandu University was benefi cial for students
and faculties for reviewing the current scenario of
hydropower and energy development.
