Take Me Home is a regional registry
that promotes communication with
law enforcement for those in our community who have
certain disabilities, special needs, or medical conditions
including, but not limited to, dementia, Alzheimer’s,
autism spectrum disorder or down syndrome.
This tool equips law enforcement with essential
information to more effectively communicate with special
needs individuals, whether responding to a call at a
residence or making contact in the field. It also serves
as a valuable resource to help reunite at-risk missing
individuals with their loved ones by maximizing search
efforts and minimizing time it takes to access pertinent
information to identity, find and safely take them home.
How does it work?
Families or caregivers can upload information about
their loved one into the registry that would assist law
enforcement when making contact with individuals in the
field who appear to be disoriented, have special needs
and/or are unable to effectively communicate. This
information might include medical diagnoses, a detailed
physical description, emergency contact information,
known routines and behavioral patterns, along with an up-
to-date photo. It also may include additional information
such as calming techniques or communication ideas to
get the individual home in a timely and safe manner.
Who should enroll?
Any individual with a disability, special needs, or medical
conditions that makes communication difficult. Take Me
Home is available to residents living within the Orange
County Sheriff’s Department jurisdiction. Any information
shared with the registry will remain private and will only
be accessible by law enforcement.
How do I enroll?
A family member or caregiver may obtain further
information and enroll a loved one into the Take Me
Home Program through the Orange County Sheriff’s
Department’s website at ocsd.org/takemehome.
