‘Tis the season to adjust our sprinkler systems! If you
haven’t taken advantage of the Weather-Based Irrigation
Controllers Rebate Program, visit https://bit.ly/2yFU9I3
for more information and be sure to adjust your sprinkler
system timer for the winter months. Historically, we have
received more rain during the winter, meaning our plants
need much less water during this time. Therefore, it is best
to dial down our sprinkler systems to reduce the watering
time during the winter months.
This simple adjustment not only saves water (hence
the smaller monthly bills), but also prevents runoff from
overwatering. When the soil is saturated by rainwater, it
absorbs less irrigation water which in turn causes irrigation
runoff to flow from the landscaped areas to the streets,
sidewalks, and the storm drain systems. This runoff can
carry soil and chemicals applied to it, as well as litter and
other pollutants on the streets to our creeks, wetlands, and
eventually the ocean. We would never intentionally put
litter, motor oil, pesticides, and fertilizer into the ocean, so
let’s do our best to prevent overwatering our landscape,
which can carry these pollutants into our waterways.
Holiday Trash Collection and Christmas
Tree Recycling
Trash Collection Schedule
CR&R will be observing the following holidays:
Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Trash pick-
up will be delayed by one day during these holidays. For
additional information regarding trash collection, please
visit CR&R’s website crrwasteservices.com and select

Christmas Tree Recycling
Christmas tree collection will begin
on Thursday, December 26 through
Wednesday, January 8, 2020. If your tree
is over 6’ tall, please cut it in half and place at the curb
next to or inside your green organics cart (if you have
one) on your regular collection day. Please remember to
remove all ornaments, lights, and stands. Flocked trees are
not recyclable and should be placed in the black cart.
Winter is here!
Another pointer to keep in mind not only in the winter, but
year-round, is pest management practices. Here are a few
important facts to keep in mind:
•
Never apply pesticides or fertilizer when rain is
predicted within the next 48 hours.
• Read labels and use only as directed.
• Do not over-apply pesticides or fertilizers.
• Apply to spots as needed rather than blanketing an
entire area.
• Utilize the least toxic alternatives to pesticides to
manage lawn and garden pests where possible.
• Pesticides are transported via runoff to waterways
and can be harmful to aquatic organisms.

practices, please visit
