Fall is here—Get storm ready!
During the fall, adjusting your sprinkler system should be
part of your regular outdoor maintenance. In the early part
of fall, when it’s still hot outside, your plants may still need
to be watered at the summer rate. However, as fall goes
on, and winter approaches, the plants needs less water,
and we need to adjust our sprinkler systems to meet the
changing needs of our lawns.
Water flowing off our lawn, garden, or driveway can carry
polluting materials, including fertilizers, pesticides, and pet
wastes into the storm drains. Because the storm drains are
separate from the sewer system, this water does not receive
treatment before flowing into our channels, wetlands,
creeks, and eventually the ocean. Here are tips for your
yard to help protect the water quality in our waterways:
• Adjust sprinklers to avoid over-watering:
o Observe how long it takes before your landscaped
area starts “shedding” water into the gutter.
o If water flows from your yard, the system is over-
watering and your timer setting should be adjusted.
Set your timer to the last minute before the water
started to run off the lawn.
• Carefully follow the directions printed on containers of
fertilizer, insecticides, and herbicides.
o
Avoid rinsing these products into the street or
gutter.
• Do not use fertilizers, insecticides or herbicides before
a predicted rainstorm or sprinkler cycle. The rain can
wash the products into the storm drain.
• Do not use water to remove pet waste, litter or yard
clippings. Pet waste and litter should be thrown in the
trash. Yard clippings should be composted or placed in
green waste containers.
Remember, if it’s not raining, there should be no water in
the gutters or storm drains!

You Are Not Alone
(YANA) Program
The YANA program is a free service offered to Laguna
Niguel residents who primarily live alone, providing
them a sense of security and ease of mind. Police
Services senior volunteers will check on the welfare
of residents either in person or by phone typically
twice a week. If the resident does not answer the door
or phone call, an emergency contact person will be
notified to check on the resident’s welfare. A deputy
sheriff may also be called upon for assistance during
these instances. The YANA program does not take
the participant to the doctor’s office, run errands or
administer medications. For additional information,
contact Police Services at (949) 362-4346.
