Citizen of the Year
John Ulrich was presented the
prestigious Citizen of the Year award at
the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner for
his many years of outstanding voluntary
service to the community. This award
was established in 1990 as a joint
project of the Laguna Niguel service
organizations, and John was selected as
the 2018 Citizen of the Year for making
Laguna Niguel a better place to live and work. John has served
on many community organizations, and most notably served on
the Military Support Committee, the Senior Citizens Committee,
and the Niguel Botanical Preserve's Board of Directors. John
has dedicated himself to various community organizations,
improving his community and the lives of the people to whom he
has graciously given his time and energy.
As a 15-year resident of the City of Laguna Niguel, John has
immersed himself in community service to benefit citizens and
organizations within Laguna Niguel on a daily basis investing
thousands of volunteer hours. In every regard, no matter the
organization or community effort, John provides the leadership
and the hands-on activity required for success. Either working
within an organization or assisting someone with a need, John is
there to help.
One particular organization that is close to John's heart is the
Sea Country Community Center's Tech Tutor Program. As the
chairman of the Laguna Niguel Senior Citizens Committee,
John saw a need for technology education within the senior
community, and he worked hard to assist with the development
of a program to fill that need. In 2015, he helped launch the
highly successful, intergenerational, Tech Tutor Program.
Students from Dana Hills High School and Aliso Niguel High
School meet each Friday afternoon to provide one-on-one
training to address issues with smart phones, tablets, and iPad
equipment. The results are exceptional technology training and
improved understanding between the generations. The Tech
Tutor Program is viewed as one of the most successful programs
over the past five years at Sea Country Community Center, and
continues to partner up students and seniors to this day!
John is an exceptional example of a Laguna Niguel citizen
because he always goes above and beyond to support his
community. The Citizen of the Year award is given to a citizen
who has demonstrated outstanding voluntary service. The
Citizen of the
Year Committee,
comprised of past
award recipients,
convenes annually
to select the winner.
Nominations are
accepted during
the month of April.
If you would like
to nominate someone for the 2019 Citizen of the Year Award,
details will be available on the City’s website in early 2020.
