STEM with the City of Orlando Water Reclamation Division

The City of Orlando Water Reclamation Division has been partnering with Girl Scouts of Citrus since fall 2016 . The first program offered by the Water Reclamation Division was the “ Flush to Finish ” fun patch . “ We had no idea what to expect with how many girls would be interested in the program , but our first program sold out as well as every other program since ” expressed Daniel Friedline , an Environmental Specialist .
Since Daniel ’ s mother was a Girl Scout , he was exposed to many Girl Scout traditions . He grew up listening to stories of the opportunities she was able to have because of her involvement in Girl Scouts . When Daniel was able to be in a position to run an education program , he immediately thought of the Girl Scouts .
“ I wanted to partner with the Girl Scouts to help continue providing exciting programs for girls in just the same way that my mother had .”
There are two goals in the programs offered by the Water Reclamation Division . The first is to educate girls on their environmental impact and to challenge each girl to be an advocate in their communities for reducing sanitary sewer overflows and keeping their surrounding environment beautiful . The second goal is to inspire girls to continue their current studies in Science , Technology , Engineering and Math ( S . T . E . M .), which will encourage them to pursue positions in the S . T . E . M . field that they will love and can challenge them .
Because of how well the initial program was received , an additional seven programs have been added to what the facility can offer Girl Scouts . These programs are facilitated by Daniel or Alyssa Madrid .
The City of Orlando Water Reclamation Division continues to offer the “ Flush to Finish ” fun patch , a “ Natural Skin Care ” fun patch , the “ Just Wing It ” fun patch and a “ Trick or Treatment Spooktacular ” event in October . They currently offer the Journey to Justice with Sage Award , Ambassador Water Badge , and maintain a section in the Citrus Council ’ s “ Earn Your Lab Coat Badge ” program .
