As all Girl Scouts know, nothing brings you closer together than making the world a better place. Ashley now calls the other 11 participants ‘sisters,’ holding her favorite souvenir tightly: In the tradition of Outward Bound Costa Rica, at the beginning of their adventure, the girls gathered in a circle and assembled 12 handmade wooden frogs into a rope necklace. While each girl held a frog, she promised to give the trip her absolute best. Each day, one girl was tasked with carrying the necklace everywhere they traveled. On the last day of the adventure, the entire group gathered at base camp, formed a circle, declared the Girl Scout Law, shared their experiences, and shed some tears. As they broke the circle in true Girl Scout fashion, they also broke their moon frog necklace, giving each girl a frog to hold. To commemorate their new relationships, each girl passed their wooden moon frog to the Girl Scout on her right, explaining how much their friendship meant. Today, you can ask Ashley to see her moon frog, but don’t think about touching it...the necklace is coveted. Page 12
