Inequality

Ruiz Rivas, Alicia

Gender inequality

In the United Nations Human Development Report (1997) it says: "No society treats its women as well as its men." Below there are examples of this.

In the workplace: Women are paid less. They don't get promoted very easily.

Inequality in education: There are more illiterate women than men. In some countries they are not allowed to go to school.

Violence: There is domestic violence. Women are sometimes abused or raped by their husbands. In countries at war the rape of women is used as a weapon.

Fraticide and infanticide: In some countries a male child is considered better than a female child when the parents know they are going to have a girl they may choose to end the pregnancy or they may be killed later. These children are referred to as "missing women."

Land ownership: In some countries women don´t have the right to own land. If the woman´s father or husband dies, he loses the place where she has lived all her life. Often widows become homeless. Sometimes, women put up with abuse to have a place to live in.
