The Ugly Truths
Martínez, Ma. del Carmen
This is not the first time that an abduction this big has taken place. In 1996, the abduction of 139 girls in Uganda went unnoticed to the world.
Thanks to the effort and struggle of the deputy headmistress of the college, Sister Rachele Fassera, from Italy, 109 Aboke girls were saved. Unfortunately 30 remained in captivity.
Ten years after the abduction, 2 girls managed to escape. Another13 girls managed to get away, and the 28 girls that remained were sold as wives.
As it usually happens with this kind of conflict, the government decided not to take action, not to get involved. As we can see clearly in the Uganda case the government rejected the proposal of a cease of fire from the terrorists in exchange for the release of some of the girls and stated that they were not responsible for anything that may happen to the girls.
