Dear Mum,

I’ve had no answer to my previous letter and I’m getting worried. I hope you are okay. You may not have received my last letter since it got stuck in the middle of the civil war, no letters, no feelings. This war is killing us all.

War is killing me, remorse is devouring me, I have to tell you…. I know why you haven’t heard anything about John. I found his corpse lying on the dark streets of Dublin. I am very distressed about this… about everything. This war is destroying people's lives, it is separating families, and I feel responsible.
