After her mother’s untimely death, twentyfour year-old Nicole Ruggerio unexpectedly became the owner of The Driving Range and Marty’s Ice Cream in Mason, NH and turned it into a live music venue as a way to deal with her deep loss. The Driving Range built in 1992 is now a unique outdoor summer music venue hidden in South Western New Hampshire and brings in some of the state’s best live music. “I wasn’t exactly anticipating taking on such a huge responsibility while grieving the loss of my mom,” said Ruggerio. “I definitely needed something to keep my interest.” In September 2010 The Driving Range (TDR) hosted Roots of Creation for the first live music event and never looked back. “During the show I immediately knew that we had something positive to offer the area,” said Ruggerio. “Everyone loves music. I decided to push TDR in a new direction by creating a venue, one that I’m passionate about and can be proud of.” Her customers call TDR a “hidden gem.” With new contributing writer Juliana Spence This summer TDR hosted Roots of Creation twice, The Ghost Dinner Band, and Rob Benton, who appeared on America’s got talent, among others. TDR is also becoming well known for Thursday Cruise Night. Classic car owners park their rides on TDR’s immaculate lawn and patrons enjoy live music, the Tiki bar, fried seafood and ice cream and the beautiful NH rolling hills surrounded by a wall of green trees. The music events are free and all ages. Ruggerio also hosts fundraising events to support friends, family and the community. “At the end of the day, all we really have is each other to lean on for support and it’s truly amazing what we can accomplish for one another in times of need,” she said. “I give where I can.” Ruggerio plans to bring in even more live music next summer. Until then Thursday Cruise Night continues through the fall foliage. TDR is open daily 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. and is located at 96 Old Turnpike (Rte 124) Rd Mason, NH.
