whoever gets the penny in their serving has good luck for the rest of the year. Many families also eat cookies. These cookies are usually in the shape of trees, presents, and other Christmas cookie cutters. Also people enjoy making gingerbread houses and covering them in candy. Families also decorate with wreaths. Wreaths are circular pine bows connected with decorative ribbons and other decorations. Merry Traditional Christmas!
St. Lucia day is a Swedish holiday. St. Lucia day is celebrated on December 13. There are many stories about St. Lucia, but the most common story is that St. Lucia was an Italian Christian girl who was killed because of her religion. She would bring food to unwelcome Christians in hiding. When she visited the Christians in hiding she would wear a crown of candles to light her way. Now in Sweden on December 13th people celebrate St. Lucia day. In schools and other communities a girl is chosen to be St. Lucia. In these communities a celebration takes place in which a girl wearing a white dress, red sash, and real candles on her head sings with the other children. A national St. Lucia is also chosen, she goes around to all of the hospitals and old folks homes to sing and spread the light around Sweden. I have interviewed Lenore Swanson about how she celebrates this holiday. Lenore said “My favorite memory was my girls singing the song and passing out saffron buns to the whole school in costume”. Saffron buns are a traditional food eaten on this holiday. Lenore also added, “that every year she still makes saffron buns and her oldest daughter gives them out”. She told me, “ I love this holiday because my family is Swedish and it is our heritage. My own girls dressed up like her with the wreath and candles on their heads when they were little”. To Lenore St.lucia was a girl who helped and saved many people. “She brought light, heat, and food to sweden during hard times”, said Lenore. Happy St. Lucia day!
