10 | CHEMISTRY AND MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY
MChem
Chemistry
Our Master in Chemistry MChem course
is a four-year degree programme that
offers excellent training for a career in
research chemistry.
Year 4
In Years 1 and 2 you will follow the same modules as the
BSc Chemistry programme (see page 11). In Year 3 the
dissertation module is replaced with the Synoptic Topics
in Chemistry module which reviews the chemistry which
you have encountered in Years 1 and 2 and gives you the
opportunity to apply your wide knowledge of chemistry to a
range of problems. The research project provides training
for the MChem research project in Year 4.
The final year of our MChem is designed to allow you
to specialise in areas of chemistry that interest you. You
will undertake a research training module and two taught
modules which allow you to choose from a range of topics in
cutting edge research chemistry;
Applied Chemistry Topics
• X-Ray-Crystallography Analytical
• Advanced Organic NMR Analytical
• Physical Organic Chemistry
• Rings, Cages and Clusters
• Solids and Surfaces
• Transition Metals
• Heterocyclic Chemistry
Research Chemistry Topics
• Chemical Sensors
• Modern Synthesis Protocols
• Chemistry of Flow
• Electrochemistry
• Computational Materials Chemistry
• Carbohydrate Chemistry

EXTERNAL EXAMINER’S QUOTE
“The universal agreement
amongst all the students
I met was that they
appreciated the hard
work of the academic
staff and in particular
their approachability.”
