winter ; two cricket pitches , a softball diamond and eight tennis courts in summer . The campus is well maintained and a progressive planting plan seeks to improve the school environment .
Over 30 individual and team sports are offered to students , as well as cultural activities such as contemporary music groups , concert band , stage band , orchestra , dance and drama . Currently we have several national representatives in a range of activities . Drama , debating , public speaking , and music are included in the curriculum . The standard of music is recognised nationally . Students take up the opportunities offered and every year sees students selected for local , provincial and national representation in a variety of pursuits . 70 % of our students are active in co-curricular activities and we field around 120 sports teams each year .
The school has well qualified staff who are able to complement their classroom teaching with a wide range of sporting and cultural tuition . Members of the community have also made a significant contribution to the life of the school in a variety of ways , providing curriculum support as tutors or coaches in sport , health education , tikanga Māori and outdoor education . The school has a very active PTA .
Over recent years , considerable effort has been made to have students involved in service to the community . This includes the incorporation of a community service element in the junior diploma and a significant student involvement with the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Bronze , Silver and Gold levels .
SCHOOL COMMUNITY
The school community includes the urban area of Havelock North , along with a surrounding rural community that focuses on orcharding , horticulture and pastoral farming . Small settlements such as Haumoana and Te Awanga offer a quite different residential environment : rural , coastal and attractive to a variety of social groups .
Havelock North has a distinctive local character . Its location has fostered a traditional independence from Hastings , even though it has been a part of the Hastings District since 1989 . The Equity Index value of 432 indicates that the community the school serves presents a
