The club also is continuing to plan an activity center at a former restaurant building next to the clubhouse . The center will have spaces for activities , gathering areas , meeting rooms , classrooms , a boardroom and fitness . Eugene said construction would begin sometime next spring .
Also , following Gov . Kate Brown ’ s recent executive order further restricting activities to minimize the spread of CO- VID-19 , the CCC halted its fitness classes . To make up for that , Jim said the club is considering adding virtual aerobic and yoga classes . He also said they were looking at hiring a speaker to talk about mental health and wellness .
“ A lot of people do depend on ( the fitness center for ) the social interaction but also just staying healthy . Without those opportunities , it leaves a gap ,” Jim said .

Who was Pompey Charbonneau ?

Uncovering the history of our community ’ s name

BY ANNE SHEVLIN When many residents move to our lovely community , they become curious about where the name Charbonneau originated from . Who decided on the name ? What is the significance to our development ? Did someone with the name Charbonneau actually live here ? And why is there a Sacajawea Drive ?
A little bit of research shows us that the founders of our neighborhood were a group of investors using the parent name of Willamette Factors , Inc . In 1971 , they envisioned a new community with a resort-like atmosphere , a short distance from downtown Portland , but removed from the bustle of the big city . Over $ 100 million was invested in the
original 477 acres . But why the name Charbonneau ? Let ’ s travel back about 200 years . At that time , the American-West in the 1800s was a place to dream about and migrate to , but little did travelers know of the many hardships that awaited them . What lay before them was a vast landscape of wild rivers , dry plains , treacherous mountains and other extreme conditions . This challenging environment forced people to quickly adapt or fail . One man who made extraordinary adjustments to these challenges was Jean Baptiste Charbonneau , born in 1805 at Fort Mandan , in what would become the North Dakota territory .
He was the son of frontier couple Sacagawea , from the Shoshone people , and French-Canadian fur trader Toussaint Charbonneau .
That same year , explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark asked Sacagawea and the elder Charbonneau to act as interpreters for their Corps of Discovery Expedition and the couple
brought along their infant son . Over the course of the 1900-mile , two-year journey , baby Baptiste won the hearts of the members of the expedition . Second Lt . Clark referred to him as “ my little dancing boy ,” often calling him “ Little Pomp ” or “ Pompey .” After his mother ’ s death , Pompey was taken in by Clark in 1811 and raised in Missouri . Clark paid for his education at St . Louis Academy , a Jesuit Catholic school , at a great expense . From 1823-1829 , Pompey traveled in Europe and North Africa with German Duke Freidrich Paul Wilhelm , where he learned to speak German and Spanish , and improved on his English and French .
Known by this time as both Jean Baptiste as well as Pompey , he returned to St . Louis in 1829 and worked as a fur trapper for many years for the American Fur Company in Idaho and Utah . Later , he was a hunter and fur trader in Colorado . He became known as a knowledgeable mountain man , inter-
