Charbonneau Arts Association

By ERIC HOEM

Looking back , moving forward

In retrospect , 2020 was not a bad year for the Charbonneau Arts Association . Personal lives were disrupted
HOEM and plans thrown askew , but we adjusted and in the process learned valuable new skills that we can utilize in the future . So , as an organization , it was actually a fairly good year .
Our remarkably successful virtual arts festival was extended from just the month of October through the end of December , enhancing our ability to use
online tools to promote appreciation of the arts , provide the opportunity for direct sales by artists and musicians through the holiday season , and advance our nonprofit mission to support arts education in our schools .
No retrospective is complete without a review of the past year . For us , making the pivot from an in-person , threeday Festival of the Arts to a month-long virtual exhibition involved tremendous collaboration and support for one another . In addition , the online format allowed us to bring more music into our festival . One disappointment was that plans we made in the spring to work jointly with the Wilsonville Festival of the Arts did not entirely materialize , but we were able to livestream Blackfish Gallery ’ s Be About Love festival . Groundwork has been laid , in addition , for future collaborations with the Wilsonville festival as plans evolve .
In 2020 we also experienced what many organizations that depend on volunteers have gone through : a feeling of being overwhelmed with all the tasks that need doing to be successful . As we end 2020 and begin a new year , the bottom line is that we need to engage more
people in our efforts to help spread the workload as well as the fun and satisfaction from achieving our nonprofit goals . We know that new residents are coming into Charbonneau every month , so to continue to be a vital part of this community we need to offer volunteer opportunities that resonate with their many talents and interests .
To avoid burning out volunteers , organizations need to bring in new participants and leaders with fresh ideas . To begin 2021 , we are starting that process at the top . I am pleased to announce that the 2021 president of the Charbonneau Arts Association will be Cathi McLain . Cathi has served in leadership positions both in her professional life and here in Charbonneau as a volunteer . She has also become a very fine watercolor artist . In 2020 , Cathi joined our board , took on the role of communications director , and did a wonderful job , including helping yours truly with text editing his Villager articles .
Web guru Elaine Swyt will continue as vice president , and I will remain on the board of directors in the ex-officio role as past president .
As Cathi takes on her new position ,
we need to find someone who has interest and background in marketing and communications to step into that important role . In today ’ s world , that includes familiarity with computer graphic design applications and marketing with the internet as well as with traditional media . If this volunteer opportunity interests you , please contact us . This information can be found at the end of this article .
For 2021 , we have several other specific needs . Moving to a virtual , online festival this year underscored the need for support with our website management . Owner of a website development business and community member , Elaine Swyt , has devoted hundreds of hours to our website . We need two or three people with internet and website skills to volunteer to help her with that massive effort , including working with WordPress , Mailchimp and other website tools .
Our association treasurer for several years , Bob Wiesenthal , is continuing for 2021 but has announced that he is ready to mentor someone with account-
