Seasoned Niner : Joyce Bowden by Cheryl Barnum
Bob and Joyce Bowden moved to Charbonneau in June of 2005 . Joyce thought she was going to be so unhappy as she was leaving teaching , couldn ’ t golf , and had no grandchildren . How was she going to entertain herself ? Joyce joined the Niners and just about drove her big sister crazy with ignorance of scoring and which club to use . An older woman told her she had no golf etiquette , which sent her home in a stew . Swallowing pride , she then just called her up and asked her to play and help her out . Oddly , the lady didn ’ t give her any advice or suggestions . Joyce feels she used to have a better drive , but says , “ Drive for show , putt for dough .”
Joyce was asked to work on the banquet , which helped her learn names and have the comfort of new friends . From there , she jumped into many activities . She helped with a Guest Day Event “ Hot , Hot , Hot ” and a Couples Party ( now called Dynamic Duo ). In 2011 , she produced the “ Charbonneau Does Broadway ” Banquet and in 2015 she did the “ Calendar Girls ” Banquet . Chairing those were so much fun and she had excellent volunteers helping . Joyce was fortunate to work with Carol Zinsli as co-vice presidents of the Niners . Also she was
busy working with the Pink Ball Golf Tournament and Auction , which taught us all in honoring those we ’ ve lost to cancer and those we hope to save with our time and efforts toward cancer research . Joyce was a Scramble chairperson with Jane Teunon and Kathy Fuller . She enjoys playing in scrambles as a chance to meet new Niners .
Joyce is now on the Greens Committee . This group is very informative about the care and upkeep of our trees , greens and equipment , plus having the opportunity to get acquainted with the dedicated personnel who work here . Joyce loves being a Niner .
“ I will never be a ‘ hot ’ player , but I adore getting outside with positive friends and we do the best we can ! I am only competitive with myself and try to remember what I have learned and then execute ,” Joyce said .
She looks forward to getting back out in larger groups and saying “ Hi ” and “ Go gettem ” to all Niners .
“ Thank you to those who have gone before us and to those who will be taking on the wonderful Niners activities in the future ,” Joyce said . “ Woohoo !”
And as Niners , we thank Joyce for her many years of dedication and leadership .
Finally , great to see a few Niners out on the course still playing ( be it somewhat wet and soggy ).
Hoping this issue finds all the Niners safe and healthy !
