Springtime at last , and as I write this , the sun is shining and the trees and shrubs are alive with new buds , surviving the ice storm and boding well for the season .
All around Charbonneau , there ’ s evidence of renewal and recovery from one of the worst ice storms in recent memory . Even better , we can also see evidence of hope and possibility as more of us have been vaccinated for COV- ID-19 and case numbers are at last on the downturn . All this bodes well for our hopes of hosting the 38th Annual Festival of the Arts at the Charbonneau Country Club Nov . 5 , 6 and 7 .
We are cautiously optimistic that life will be closer to normal by then , but thanks to our experience with our 2020 Virtual Exhibition Gallery , we ’ ll be ready to do that once again , or have a combination of live with virtual if all falls into place in our universe .
The CAA Board reluctantly accepted Rick Cady ’ s resignation as chair of the Festival Organizing Committee , but are happy that he will remain a member of the committee and the board .
John McLain has stepped up to join the board and to chair the 2021 Festival Organizing Committee .
“ The CAA has gained an excellent and well-respected new chair of the Charbonneau Festival of the Arts ,” said Rick . McLain is well known in

Charbonneau as past president of the Men ’ s Club and a member of the Charbonneau Country Club Board . He ’ s an excellent organizer and recruiter of talent , so all agreed the festival is in good hands .
The CAA Board has accepted the resignation of longtime board member , Jenni Kadwell . We have Jenni to thank for filing for and establishing our official 501 ( c )( 3 ) nonprofit status in 2015 after becoming president in 2014 .
This allows donations to be tax deductible and has significantly enhanced our fundraising efforts . After her term as president ended , Jenni transitioned to working closely with the art departments at Canby and Wilsonville High Schools , who are the primary recipients of the funds we raise at the festival . Her enthusiasm and commitment to the association and to the teachers and students we serve has been a hallmark of Jenni ’ s service to CAA .
Our Biggest Pumpkin stone sculpture project is getting off the ground . The $ 2,500 we were awarded by the Clackamas County Cultural Coalition will be used for materials . Our sculptor , Charbonneau resident Benjamin Mefford , is on the hunt for an appropriate block of granite . Finding a 4-foot cube of granite is not so easy and since it will weigh over five tons , a definite challenge to maneuver . The project will also be done cooperatively with companion grants to cover other expenses . We expect to have more details in April and hope to publish photographic progress as the project takes shape .
Finally , we can now officially congratulate Elaine Swyt , board vice-president and chair of communications and publicity , for being named Wilsonville ’ s First Citizen by Wilsonville Rotary .
We are so proud of Elaine and can attest to the time and talent she brings to the community . As I said last month , Elaine was already our “ first citizen ” and is now recognized as Wilsonville ’ s .

Our community can make a great impact by serving others .
We have always been a collection site for Cell Phones for Soldiers . We are adding Eyeglass and Hearing Aid donations for the Lions Site and Hearing Foundation . Bring us your no longer needed eyeglasses , hearing aids , mobile devices , or tablets and we will get these much needed items to our partners to get in the hands of those who need it most .
What is Cell Phones for Soldiers ?
Mobile devices and tablets donated to Cell Phones For Soldiers are sold either to an electrontic refurbisher or a recycler . The proceeds from this process are used to purchase prepaid international calling cards for troops and to provide emergency funding to veterans .
What is the Lions Site and Hearing Foundation ?
Over 75,000 eyeglasses are collected every year from communities across the state , mostly thanks to the efforts of Lions Clubs who collect the eyeglasses . For decades , the Lions of Oregon have provided high quality rebuilt hearing aids to people who cannot afford to purchase new aids .
