Intergenerational program inspires residents to pay it forward
Thanks to technology , Spring- Ridge resident Barbara Josephson is able to stay in touch with granddaughter Amy Barlow , who lives over 5,500 miles away in Vienna , Austria . The pair communicates monthly , with Barbara sharing how she spends her day at the senior living community while social distancing . When Amy , a Girl Scout Troop leader , found out the youth organization was collaborating with AARP ’ s Wish of a Lifetime , she knew her grandmother and her neighbors would be the perfect recipients of the feel-good program .
Wish of a Lifetime ’ s mission is to create intergenerational connections . This year , due to COVID-19 , the Girl Scouts decided to have troops send heartfelt cards to spread love and joy to thousands of older adults across the world .
“ I am personally so grateful for all the wonderful staff at SpringRidge for providing superb care to my grandmother ,” said Amy . “ While our family serves in Austria , we have been able to communicate with Grammie with the extra help of Zest Assistant Diane Newlin . I ’ m thankful she went the extra mile for our family . The Girl Scouts and I wanted to bring happiness and comfort to Grammie and her friends .”
Vienna-based Girl Scout Troop 84 designed colorful cards and letters for residents at SpringRidge , who were thrilled by the international surprise .
