Election year heats up
There is an old adage : Never talk politics or religion when inviting company over dinner . Of course , you can add discussions
SWITZER about how much
you make or how much you weigh as well . Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Louis Brandeis once said that the most important political office is that of the private citizen . In another quote , Ralph Nader said , “ turn on to politics or politics will turn on you .”
Almost 94 % of Charbonneau ’ s registered voters voted in the last election . Charbonneau is a force and you can be assured that those seeking elective office know the numbers . This May , the primary election will include two county commissioner seats , as well as nominees for the newly formed State Senate and State Representative districts respectively . The Primary will also determine the Republican and Democrat nominees for governor . At the federal level , Charbonneau is in the newly formed sixth Congressional District . Again , the nominees will be determined in the May Primary .
This column hopes to keep you posted , in a non-partisan way , of developments as we head to Election Day . We hope , if pandemic restrictions ease , to be able to provide candidate forums so you can address your concerns directly .
Supreme Court declines airport appeal
“ The Court has considered the petition for review and orders that it be denied .”
The Oregon Supreme Court has affirmed the June decision of the Oregon Court of Appeals in the appeal of the Aurora Airport Master Plan . At this point , the Oregon Department of Aviation ( ODA ) will continue its work on a new master plan . As reported here ,
CCC has a seat on the Public Advisory Committee for that plan . However , the PAC has no direct input in the process . We will make our points but the expectations are very limited .
With the legal issues having been determined by the court , the ODA may look to the Legislature for remedies that would allow the airport to be exempt from certain land use laws . That is speculative and there are no current bills addressing that issue .
CCC will continue in its role on the PAC and make sure our established positions are voiced . The next PAC meeting is scheduled for early March . Dating back to the 1976 Aurora Airport Master Plan , the ODA was aware that up to 5,000 people would be living within a short distance from the runway . At that time , the runway was 4,000 feet and there were very few jet aircraft using the airport . In 2018 , there were over 35 jet aircraft based at Aurora and dozens per week using the facility on an itinerant basis . Both the ODA and the governing board , the OAB , continue to be more concerned with the business interests at the airport and not those of the surrounding neighborhoods .
