New Year ’ s resolutions in Charbonneau
The Charbonneau Country Club Board , residents share goals for 2022
Ever wonder how certain traditions got started ? Resolutions for the new year piqued my interest . After the last two years of dealing with COVID-19 , it seems that most of us would be happy just to not get sick and get back to normal . Trying to lose weight or even exercise more were not that important .
According to the History Channel , the Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year ’ s resolutions , some 4,000 years ago . But for them , the new year was in March when their crops were planted . They hoped that if they
kept their word , then their pagan gods would bestow favor on them for the coming year .
The Romans , under Emperor Julius Caesar , created the modern calendar and established Jan . 1 as the beginning of the new year . January is
“ According to recent studies , as many as 45 % of Americans say they usually make New Year ’ s resolutions .” named for Janus , the two-faced God whose spirit inhabited doorways and arches . They began the year by offering sacrifices and promises of good conduct for the coming year .
Today , instead of making promises to the gods , most people focus on self-improvement . While most center on weight loss and / or exercise , there are dozens of articles on the subject offering advice what resolutions to make and how to keep them . According to recent studies , as many as 45 % of Americans say they usually make New Year ’ s resolutions . Board member John McClain jokes that he wants to keep his to-do list down to four things , rather than four lists of things to do . Anne Shevlin wants to work more on her golf game while Linda Owen has expressed her desire to work even harder on improving our community . Gary Newbore goes on a crash diet in January , presumably so he can enjoy the rest of the year . Kathy Harp resolves to give at least one complement each day . Steve Switzer resolves to work even harder on improving his playing of the guitar and keyboard that sit in his office . Funny how things are different when you write them down as goals and post them on your bulletin board .
The CCC Board is excited to start the new year . As Gary pointed out in his president ’ s column , the new Activity Center is scheduled to open in late February and we will continue to work on plans for the clubhouse ( now called Event Center ), the paddle club and other projects . By being on the board , the directors have already resolved to continue to work hard on maintaining and improving our wonderful Charbonneau community .
