A couple of Charbonneau ’ s super seniors
While golf tournaments use 65 as the age for super seniors , Charbonneau has a couple of players that are an inspiration for all of us as they continue to be very competitive well past that age :
 Alan Southwell
Alan started playing golf in 1950
while attending Linfield College on a football scholarship and where he met his future ( and current ) wife Elisabeth . Upon meeting Elisabeth ’ s family for the first time , he was asked to join her family ’ s regular Saturday morning golf game at Broadmoor . Since he had no golf clubs , he went to a secondhand store where he bought a golf bag and five clubs .
He has played at Charbonneau since 1995 and joined the Men ’ s Club in 2000 when they moved here . He indicates he has played in most of the club ’ s games and has found playing in the Men ’ s Club to be ever important and valuable to him . Alan is likely part of a record group at Charbonneau who played 220 rounds together in one year .
Alan plays golf because he “ loves the game ” and the “ many challenging opportunities for a shot ” are very appealing to him . He has played golf at St . Andrews and Bath , England as well as Pebble Beach and many courses in Oregon . He plays regularly with his son Chad on Tuesdays and they pair together at Bandon in the Family Match Play Tournament and the Charbonneau Invitational .
At the age of 91 , Alan keeps playing to “ improve his game ” and often goes out by himself to practice on the course . The highlight of his golf career is the three holes-in-one that he has had including one at Charbonneau on Red 2 . His current handicap index is 14 and he won the 2nd Flight Low Net in this year ’ s Club Championship .

at his school and he didn ’ t even know anyone who played golf . He was first introduced to the game in his junior year of college as an elective PE credit . Since that introduction , he has learned the game mostly by getting on the course and playing with no formal instruction .
The pure enjoyment of the game , the companionship and getting out and being active are motivators for Carl . He still likes the challenge of trying to shoot the best score he can each time out . That is reflected in his Handicap Index of 8.7 , which translates into a lot of sub-70 rounds at Charbonneau . Not bad for an 87 year old ! He does indicate that his current handicap is as low as it has ever been in all of his years playing golf .
Carl has a lot of fond memories of playing with family and friends on some beautiful golf courses in Oregon and other parts of the Country . His most recent fond golf memory is winning the 2019 Invitational Golf Tournament here at Charbonneau with his
Carl Hanacek has played golf full-time in Charbonneau for the last few years .
grandson as his partner .
He has played full time at Charbonneau since 2017 . Prior to that he played at Meriwether Golf Club in Hillsboro and a number of courses in the winter in the Palm Desert , California area . He enjoys playing at Charbonneau because he finds the course fun and challenging and the members and staff friendly and fun to be around .
Rule of the Month — out of bounds
Last month ’ s rule focused on balls in a “ penalty area ” and your options including playing the ball as it lies . In contrast , the rules for out-ofbounds do not allow hitting a ball that is deemed out-of-bounds ( OB ).
So how do you determine if a ball is OB ? The Rules of Golf , specifically Rule 18.2 , has a excellent diagram which is better than many words of explanation . Your ball at rest is out of bounds only when all of it is outside the boundary edge of the course .
