There was a large turnout for the October ShakeOut drill

The Charbonneau Emergency Preparedness and Public Safety ( EPPS ) Committee is a dedicated group that provides ongoing valuable experiences for the community , encouraging us all to be prepared for any type of emergency and looking after the community ’ s safety . My training with EPPS began a few months ago as they organized for The Great Oregon ShakeOut Earthquake Drill . Like many , I was aware of the nine-point earthquake that is predicted to strike the northwest at any given moment . However , I lacked a critical understanding of the risks that came with being unprepared for a natural disaster of that size . Throughout the ShakeOut timeline that knowledge grew , and under the guidance of the EPPS Committee I continue to learn that each of us needs to be prepared for what is to come .
Planning for the great ShakeOut in Charbonneau begins in August every year . It has been about five years since EPPS became a standing committee of the Charbonneau Board . However , the ShakeOut tradition was started by the Charbonneau Greens Homeowners Association eight years ago . With almost a decade of ShakeOut drills under their belt , I ’ m convinced that dedicated leadership is what has slowly cultivated the healthy community of participants today . For instance , committee leaders are constantly working on improving their organization by recruiting , assigning and updating captain information for
“ Under the guidance of the EPPS Committee I continue to learn that each of us needs to be prepared for what is to come .” each neighborhood . Participation is constantly encouraged , recognized and recorded for next year ’ s planning . Productive meetings also provide continuous training and education to new and existing members . A roster of medically trained residents is continually updated , and an application to have a Charbonneau resident be on the Clackamas County Commissioners ’ Emergency Preparedness Council has been submitted .
Even with that knowledge in hand , I was still deeply impressed to see the amount of Charbonneau residents who participated in the Oct . 2 , ShakeOut . The Charbonneau EPPS Committee ’ s dedication to spreading awareness , education and improving preparedness planning throughout the community paid off when this year ’ s ShakeOut stats — recorded by EPPS member Jerry Baker — were announced . The numbers showed a 45 % participation throughout Charbonneau . That ’ s 590 homes with 14 out of the 15 HOAs that participated . The numbers also revealed that there was a 4 % participation increase over last year . It was refreshing but mostly reassuring to learn that we spend a significant portion of our time in a community that prepares for the future .
I don ’ t consider myself an earthquake drill expert quite yet , but I feel more prepared than I was three months ago . I am already looking forward to next year ’ s ShakeOut and being a part of the planning and logistics . If you need more information on how you and your home can prepare , drop by the clubhouse and ask me for a RED Folder of Emergency Preparedness information and remember : Don ’ t be scared ! Be prepared !
