been with us for the past few years as the operations manager , and now she ’ s in the catbird seat , at least until what we ’ re told will be a big nationwide search for someone who is important enough to helm the library in the future . Helpful library staff have pointed out that the city could save money on business cards and letterhead by simply crossing out the word “ acting ,” instead of reprinting same for a new face . Is anyone listening ?
We ’ ll be closed all day on the 25th — Merry Christmas ! We may be closed on the 24th as well — oddly enough , we ’ re not yet sure . Please check the website for more details .
As previously mentioned , December is a slow month for us . Most of our public programming is still via Zoom . But fear not ! We are hoping to unroll in-person programming ( slowly ) in January , so stay tuned .
On Wednesday , Dec . 1 at 11 a . m .,
you can join us online with Dr . Bill Thierfelder , professor emeritus and docent at the American Museum of Natural History , for Twenty Christmas Tales . The class will explore twenty familiar Christmas stories like , “ The Gift of the Magi ” by O . Henry , “ Christmas Day in the Morning ” by Pearl S . Buck , “ The Burglar ’ s Christmas ” by Willa Cather plus “ A Christmas Carol ” by Charles Dickens , and others . Sign up online to reserve your space and receive the Zoom meeting code .
Our jolly English Conversation Group meets online each week on Monday evenings at 6 p . m . Join us to practice English ( all levels encouraged ) and for the hearty conviviality ! Send an email for the Zoom code , and for as-yet-unconfirmed holiday scheduling .
On Wednesday , Dec . 8th at 1 p . m ., join us online for Article Club , where we discuss interesting , and relatively non-controversial articles found in national media . We ’ ll be discussing “ I Was There : The 1968 Miss America Pageant Protest ” by Robin Morgan , as told to Allison
Mcnearney , from History Stories at history . com
It was 50 years ago when , on Sept . 7 , 1968 , a group of women bused down from New York City to Atlantic City , N . J ., to protest Miss America . Dubbing the swimsuit competition a “ cattle auction ,” this “ group of angry ladies ” as TIME called them back then , took to the boardwalk . They had seized on Miss America as an example of a broader problem : the celebration of women who fit limited beauty standards and filled limited roles in society .
Please get the Zoom code from our website , or give us call or email to join .
On Thursday , Dec . 9 , from 6-7:30 p . m ., our online book club will be discussing Octavia Butler ’ s Parable of the Sower together with Ray Bradbury ’ s “ Fahrenheit 451 .” What could be more Decembery than to read beside a roaring fire ? As always , call or email for the Zoom code .
On Friday , Nov . 12 , from 7-8 p . m ., teens ( in sixth through 12th grades ) can join us online for our monthly
teen event ! Be there , or else you can ’ t hang out with the popular kids anymore ! Zoom code is available on our website .
Finally , on Thursday , Dec . 16 , from 10:30-11 a . m ., please join us in person at the Stein-Boozier Barn ( in Memorial Park , across the street from the library ) for Winter Wonderland Storytime in the barn ! It might be chilly , but you and your kids are invited to dress warmly and see the show ! Those who can ’ t make it can catch it live on the library ’ s YouTube channel !
One of our pandemic innovations has proven surprisingly popular ! Starting Dec . 18 , please stop by the library to pick up a free “ Take and Make ” bag while supplies last . Kid bags will include science and craft activities . Teen and adult bags will include supplies for a holiday craft , as well as wintry activities . Pick up your bag during library open hours , while supplies last .
Have a very happy holiday season from your Wilsonville Library ! See you in January . Here ’ s hoping it will be a good year for all of us !
