Charbonneau ’ s Emergency Preparedness and Public Safety ( EPPS ) Committee is asking residents to BE PREPARED IN ADVANCE for community-wide disasters that have threatened our Charbonneau community in the recent few years : fires , heat domes , ice storms , windstorms and extended power outages . Residents who prepare in advance will be most likely to meet the challenges of the overdue 9.0 earthquake . Online LINKS to the following recommendations can be found on the CCC website at www . charbonneaucountryclub . com under the main menu item “ Staying Safe ”

How big and bad is a 9.0 earthquake ? Here are some important differences between the more common disasters and the less common 9.0 earthquake : Fire , floods , wind , ice , heat — Prepare in advance — Advance warning — Can take evasive action — Several per year — Increasing events per year 9.0 Earthquake — Prepare in advance — NO advance warning — NO evasive action possible — Once every few hundred years — We are OVERDUE for 9.0 Other than an earthquake , all the other disasters usually involve some level of advance notice prior to the disaster , asking residents to take action — even if they have not previously prepared in advance . But the 9.0 won ’ t provide any advance notice allowing you to prepare . When the shaking starts it will be too late to make a trip to the store , or order from Amazon , or make plans to leave town to a safe place . Drop , take cover and hold on . When the shaking stops , it is likely that bridges and trees are down , power is |
out and water / sewer / gas lines are broken . The associated tsunami will hit the Oregon coast and many miles inland , in a matter of minutes , not 24 hours , and not a few days . One estimate of the impact of a 9.0 earthquake along the Oregon / Washington coast is that it would be 45 times worse than the “ The Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 ” which is fourth on the list of the top “ 10 Worst Natural Disasters .” Fires , floods , heat waves and hurricanes are the other disasters on the top ten list ; Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was tenth .
“ Seismologists were surprised in 2004 when a magnitude 9.3 quake and tsunami devastated Sumatra and caused more than 200,000 deaths around the Pacific Rim . They were surprised again in 2011 by Japan ’ s 9.0 quake and tsunami , which killed more 15,000 people and touched off a nuclear catastrophe that continues to this day . No one should be surprised if a magnitude-9 megaquake erupts off America ’ s West Coast .” “ If such a 9.0 quake were to hit today , experts estimate that it could kill more than 10,000 people and cause $ 80 billion in damage in Oregon and Washington alone ” as reported by NBC News from a study in October ’ s issue of the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America .” PBS ’ s Weathered is a digital online show hosted by meteorologist Maiya May . A recent show noted that the Cascadia Subduction Zone is a sleeping monster lurking just off the Northwest coast of the United States . It extends 600 miles between Northern California and Vancouver B . C . and history records indicate that we experience a massive megathrust earthquake every 250 years on average . The last one happened 321 years ago , and scientists say there is a 30 % chance we ’ ll see another nearby in the next 50 years . Are you ready ?
