Staying Ahead of the Trends

Meet the Stylist :

Kelly Markos , Owner of d ’ Markos Salon
Kelly Markos has spent her life mastering both the art and business of cosmetology . Starting at age 18 in a small hometown salon , her entrepreneurial spirit — passed down from her father and grandfather — guided her in exploring new ventures , from owning her own salon to launching a cosmetic line and traveling as an educator . In 2007 , she took over Randall ’ s Salon in Montgomery , transforming it into d ’ Markos . Over the last 18 years , she has navigated challenges like the recession and pandemic while redeveloping the salon into a Summit Salon framework which enables stylists to create independent success while working within a commission-based salon . d ’ Markos focuses on leadership , business development and team training and remains a professional and welcoming space for all guests .
When it comes to the beauty industry , trends are constantly shifting , and this year is no different . Markos emphasizes the industry ’ s fluid nature , stating , “ In the beauty industry , we are always trending . This year ’ s trend is ‘ The Year of the Bob .’ We ’ ve been creating versions of the bob for years , but like all aspects of fashion , styles get reimagined over time and return with a twist .” Haircuts like the bob continue to evolve , while color services are also embracing fresh , bold trends . Vivid colors — ranging from rainbow hues to mermaid-inspired shades — are gaining popularity alongside the classic Balayage highlights , which Markos claims are here to stay .
Extensions have also transformed the landscape , allowing clients to achieve added length and volume . “ Trends come and go , but some are here to stay ,” Markos notes , highlighting how the industry thrives on creativity and reinvention .
STYLING TOOL OF CHOICE : My feather blade razor . This has become one of my top skills , and I try to pass along the ability to properly shape hair with this tool to younger stylists .
AWAY FROM THE CHAIR : Outside of work , I enjoy time with my grandchildren , trips to the beach , travel , comedy shows , repurposing old furniture pieces and backyard projects .
GO-TO TUNES : My contemporary Christian playlist named “ Feeling God ” including songs by Chris Tomlin , Tauren Wells , Danny Gokey , Elevation Worship , Lauren Daigle and more .

Helping the Next Generation
Markos prides herself on training and mentoring young stylists , viewing it as “ passing the torch ” to the next generation . She also advocates for reform in Alabama ’ s cosmetology licensing requirements , emphasizing that aspiring hairdressers should not have to test in all service areas — hair , nails and aesthetics — when these fields operate independently today . Markos has approached the Alabama Board of Cosmetology to propose the introduction of a separate “ hairdresser ” license , similar to those in other states , but acknowledges the challenges of navigating the legislative process to effect this change .
