MPS ANNOUNCES NEW HIGH SCHOOL

Following a school board vote for renaming last year , Montgomery Public Schools is replacing Robert E . Lee High School with a new development located off North Eastern Boulevard that will be called Dr . Percy Julian High School . MPS hopes to have the bidding process complete by fall and to start construction by spring 2024 . The new school is part of MPS ’ capital improvement plan that is bringing new upgrades across the school system .

ENROLLMENT INCREASES AT ALABAMA COMMUNITY COLLEGES DESPITE NATIONAL DECLINE

Student enrollment at Alabama ’ s community and technical colleges is increasing , bucking a trend that saw a decrease in enrollment at community colleges across the nation . Alabama ’ s community colleges have experienced an increase in enrollment by at least five percent each year since 2020 . Many of the students who attend community college in Alabama live here , and more than 70 percent who obtain a degree continue to live and work in the state . These students and alumni of colleges add $ 6.6 billion to Alabama ’ s economy , supporting one out of every 27 jobs in the state . More than 155,000 students received education or training in one of Alabama ’ s 24 community or technical colleges last year , which included a 21-percent increase in freshmen applications last fall .

ASU PARTNERS WITH KATE SPADE AND THE BORIS L . HENSON FOUNDATION

The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation ( BLHF ) and Kate Spade New York have teamed up to create more accessible mental health resources for women and girls and together announced the launch of “ She Care Wellness Pods ,” a new program that aims to reach more than 25,000 Black women on HBCU campuses with frontline mental wellness care . In partnership with trusted community resources , the program will take a multifaceted approach through the opening of the pods , which are physical structures installed on campuses to offer a range of services .

SIX ALABAMA COMPANIES PRESENTED WITH GOVERNOR ’ S TRADE EXCELLENCE AWARDS

ACCS CELEBRATES 60TH ANNIVERSARY

April was National Community College Month and marked the beginning of the Diamond Jubilee , a two-year celebration centering on the Alabama Community College System ’ s 60th anniversary and its impact across Alabama . As part of the celebration , dozens of community service projects were launched across the state , with a majority focused on beautification and litter pickup projects in partnership with the Alabama People Against a Littered State ( ALPALS ) and Coca-Cola UNITED Spring Cleanup program , “ Don ’ t Drop it on Alabama .”
Governor Kay Ivey recognized six Alabama companies with Governor ’ s Trade Excellence Awards for success in selling their goods and services in markets across the globe , helping to sustain robust export activities that create jobs and spark economic growth across the state . Among the list were two central Alabama companies ; Tuskegee University and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing . In addition , Governor Ivey presented Tuskegee University with a 2023 Governor ’ s Trade Excellence Award for extraordinary results in international initiatives that include partnerships with dozens of overseas universities and hosting students from more than 20 countries in recent years .
